At Documenta 7 in 1982, Gerhard Richter was quoted in the catalogue text saying:

"Art is the highest form of Hope."

The early eighties were turbulent times for Europe and in the UK. Not dissimilar to Europe in our times with the war in Ukraine, wider global adversity and the severe cost of living crisis in the UK.

Morphe's annual Interface conference will be exploring the idea of 'hope' and positivity to encourage us in our personal art practice as well as consider how the art we make can bring hope to the communities, cities and the world we live in.

Our returning speaker Deborah Lewer will investigate the theme of hope in art through art practices that are also about resistance, protest and satire. Following on from last year she will begin with the Dada movement, widening her research to look at more recent contexts and works of contemporary art.
